A lot of beginning guitar players write to me and ask for advice how to play guitar ‘fast’. I inevitably write them back to ask whether they already play guitar, and just want to be faster on the fretboard, or whether they’re beginners who want a shortcut to basic proficiency.

This got me wondering whether there might be a connection between the two. It seemed far-fetched; but, the more I thought about it, the more parallels I saw between these two seemingly different levels of training.

So, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that:

1. You can learn guitar faster by studying the techniques involved making your overall playing ability ‘faster’, and..

2. You can become a ‘faster’ guitar player by re-focusing your practice sessions on the basic concepts and techniques taught to every beginner.

The reasons for this overlap and can be summed up in a handy acronym: M.O.S.T. — or, “Memorization, Observation and Strength Training.” Let’s cover each one to clarify the point.

Memorization

One of the things that slows down both beginning and intermediate guitar players, no matter how good of an ‘ear’ for music they have, is a failure to memorize:

1. All of the notes on the fretboard

2. Chords and scales for the Major and Minor Keys

It doesn’t matter whether you’re just starting out, or have a few year’s playing experience already. The fact is that ‘hunting and pecking’ for the right chord or note will slow you down.

You don’t have time in the middle of a song to stop so you can figure out if a Dbminor chord will work in the key of B, and then figure out where that chord is relative to your current position on the fretboard.

If you’re a beginner, then memorizing your fretboard is the place to start. This will make it easier for you to memorize chords and scale patterns, as well as understand the relationship between them in music theory.

If you’re already playing, then you should focus on strengthening your knowledge in both areas. You probably have a good part of your fretboard memorized already, but can you jump to any note or chord automatically?

Observation

Your senses of touch, sight and sound are all involved in playing guitar. As you play, you will no doubt feel the development of ‘muscle memory’ as your fingers play across familiar chords and scales. You will see patterns and relationships on the fretboard. You will hear what you’re playing and come to connect it with all of the above.

Memorization is the foundation for observation, and observation is the key to training your mind and hands to work in concert automatically.

If you want the ability to play anything you hear ‘in your head’ the moment your fingers reach the fretboard, then you must wed memorization with observation when you practice.

Strength Training

No, I’m not suggesting you lift weights at the gym! Strength training, which really includes ‘dexterity’ training, is part and parcel of everything we’ve covered so far.

Beginning guitarists often struggle to hold down chords, and to play scales with all four fingers. This is simply a matter of building strength, muscle memory and dexterity through consistent and correct practice.

Intermediate players who want to get faster on the fretboard must realize that the most likely culprit(s) behind issues with ’speed’ will be a deficiency in strength, dexterity, correct techqnie or all three.

Beginners should focus on strength building exercises and on performing those exercises perfectly. If you’re given an exercise that requires you to hit a note with your pinky, but you decide to ‘cheat’ by using your ring finger, know that your playing will hit a wall down the line.

Likewise, players who can’t seem to exceed their current speed on the guitar should examine their own technique. Have you stopped working on your strength training because the exercises are boring? Is your technique ’sloppy’?

There are some things you simply can not get away with at 160 beats per minute the way you can at 120 beats per minute.

In conclusion, the key to learning guitar faster – as well as playing it faster – rests in following the M.O.S.T. formula. It really is all about getting the basics right from the start!

It seems that some guitar players are so focused on what they should be doing when playing guitar, that sometimes bad habits can creep in without them even knowing! Could you be one of these players?

When guitar players watch each other, usually they try to pick up on all the bad things that they are doing rather than the good things, I’m sure you know what I mean as you have probably found yourself judging another Guitar player just on their mistakes. This is an easy trap to fall into, and most will never realized they even fell into it! What this means is that if you want to impress other Guitar players (Especially good ones) you are going to have to go back and fix all those bad habits you may have created for yourself along the way.

The first and biggest mistake a lot of guitar players make, usually when they first start playing, is to learn a song, and try play it straight away. This usually results in the song sounding sloppy, messy and just plain bad! Whenever you learn a song, do what the pros do! Get a metronome, learn the song at half speed, or even slower! I am sure that you could play anything in the world on guitar at a snails pace! So do it, then everyday slowly increase the BPM (Beats Per Minute) on your metronome, next thing you know, you will be playing songs you thought were impossible note for note and completely clean! Nobody wants to see someone try play something they can’t so just don’t do it.

Another mistake a lot of beginners make is to only use 2 or 3 fingers, usually leaving out their pinky because ‘It’s too hard’. The only reason it is too hard is because people do not generally use the little finger separately in day to day life so the muscles are not developed enough for your brain to tell it what to do. Get all your fingers moving, even your pinky. Soon you will find that with a little practice is will soon become just as easy to use as any other finger.

Have you ever seen someone play a song, make a mistake, then stop, start again and make the same mistake? This is because they are training them selfs to make mistakes! Whenever you play a song, if you make a mistake, whatever you do, do not stop! This is the worst thing you can do, especially when first learning a song. Even if you make a complete mess of it, try to get the rhythm going and after you finish the song, go from the start. If you stop as soon as you make a mistake it can be very easy to get stuck at that point, and that is when a lot of people put the guitar down and never look at it again. Just because they didn’t know they were training them selfs to make mistakes.

Don’t jump ahead of your ability. You should know your own ability’s on a guitar, what you can play and what you can’t. Don’t try play something that is far beyond your current level of playing, because you simply wont be able to do it. Instead, build up your skills slowly. I know nobody wants to hear that, but it is the tried and true way to really get good at the guitar.

The main thing you have to remember is that the rock stars you try to emulate have been playing guitar in some cases their whole life! It takes a long time to get really good at guitar no matter how you learn. But stick at it, and one day all that work will pay off.

If you want to learn to play guitar, then you need to make sure that you’re getting the most from your playing time. When I was learning, I went through the pain you feel when you seem to go for weeks or even months without getting any better. The reason this happens is that without realising it, you get stuck in a “learning rut” – you’re trying really hard, but you’re not letting your brain recover enough to take in new information. So how do you get round this, and move your guitar playing into the fast lane?

1. Change guitar playing activities

What do we mean by this? Well, there are different aspects to playing any musical instrument. For example, if learning the guitar, you have to know chords and scales, you have to learn the chords which make up the songs you want to play, and maybe you want to learn the solos too. So don’t get hung up on one tricky chord, or on a cool riff you really want to play. As soon as something starts to seem difficult, stop and change! If your soloing isn’t progressing, spend a week learning new songs with chords you already know well. If there’s a tricky chord sequence in your favourite track that you just can’t get, then leave it for a couple of weeks, and try to improve your guitar tabs skills.

2. Play with other guitar players

It never ceases to amaze me how many people miss this one, and it’s probably the most important thing you can do. I remember I probably practiced on my own for two or three years, because I didn’t think I was good enough to play with other musicians. Big mistake! When I finally did start to mix with some other musicians, it was amazing how much I learned, and what was even more amazing was that I was able to show the other guys a couple of tricks. That really boosted my confidence, and my guitar playing went from strength to strength!

3. Use a really good learning tool

Over the years I’ve probably tried everything. Guitar books, guitar lessons on CD and DVD, private one to one guitar lessons, jamming along to records and CDs, watching peoples fingers in music videos – you name it… I eventually realised that what you really need is a complete learning package which encompasses the best parts of all these techniques, and packages it into a structured, easy to follow guitar course.

There are some superb online guitar courses available now, and I’ve spent a bit of time looking at the best ones, which I’ve reviewed here: Guitar Lessons. If you add up the amount you could easily spend on books, DVDs and private lessons, you’ll see that these represent superb value for money.

The guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments, especially to budding musicians who are looking for the easiest way to unleash their inner rock star.

The guitar is very versatile, present in a lot of musical genres such as folk, acoustic, jazz and rock. It is also portable and the basic acoustic guitar is relatively cheaper than most musical instruments. Aside from being all of these things, the guitar also adds cool points to whoever carries and/or plays it. When a person can play guitar, he automatically turns into a pop star wannabe into a serious musician. When a person can play guitar, he becomes cooler than he actually is.

I bet you want to learn to play guitar right now. Or else you wouldn’t be reading this in the first place.

The regular guitar has six strings. The top string, if you are right-handed, is called the 6th string. It is an E note. It is the thickest string and it produces the lowest sound. Next to it is the 5th string, an A note. The 4th string is a D, 3rd is a G note and 2nd is a B. The bottom string is the 1st string. It is the thinnest string and it produces the highest-pitched sound.

The strings run across the guitar’s large body until the headstock, where the turning keys are found. The turning keys allow you to tune your guitar strings. The guitar’s neck is the long, thin band that is attached to the body. In the neck, you can find the frets, or the metal strips that divide the neck into several sections. Musicians also refer to the space between these metal strips as frets.

Begin your guitar lessons by playing the strings “open,” which means plucking without using the frets. Listen to the sounds you produce.

Now, hold down a string on a fret with the tip of your finger then try plucking that string. This is how you play an individual note. Try this with all frets and with all strings. Remember the sounds the strings make.

After you learn playing single notes, you can now move on to playing chords. Chords are combinations of two or more notes. Some chords involve the playing of three or more strings. This could be done by strumming.

Another important thing you have to study to be able to play guitar is the guitar tab. A guitar tab is a guitarist’s guide. The tab looks like the guitar, with lines that represent strings. There are also numbers that instruct you to hold down specific frets while plucking a string.

Perfecting the art of guitar playing entails a lot of practice. Repeat playing single notes then move on to chords. Do this until you can confidently try to practice playing simple songs. Practice until you learn the string-fret combinations by heart.

Don’t beat yourself up over the head when you don’t get the song right the first time you try. Relax. Learning to play guitar would not be easy, but it should be fun.

Some people put off trying to learn to play guitar because of commitments or the time isn’t right or some other excuse. For these people taking action is the most urgent need in their quest to learn to play guitar. So maybe in the interest of getting started with some kind of guitar lessons a little of what you might perceive as the need for quality should be sacrificed.

To start out as a guitar player, you don’t need the perfect guitar, just go down to your local Walmart or Guitar Center now and pick up a reasonable looking and sounding acoustic guitar to get you started on your guitar lessons. The acoustic guitar is a tiny bit harder to fret notes on but it’s much more easy on the finger tips of a learner guitar player.

Now you have got your first guitar, the serious work begins. If you want to impress your friends without actually becoming a guitar virtuoso you will need the tabs for some of your favorite songs, some chord charts and a half hour or so of quiet time to learn how to read guitar tab.

If you are going to be really serious about learning guitar and be prepared to maybe spend some more money on a better guitar in the near future and to spend an hour or two every day practicing and learning your material, you will need more knowledge. You will want to learn how chords are constructed and why scales are the way they are. You will also need to know where the notes are on the guitar fingerboard.

If you have the money, get yourself some lessons. A guy telling you where to put your fingers and how to hold the guitar can be a big help at the beginning when you learn to play guitar. Some guitarists find after ten years that they’ve been holding the guitar incorrectly and they have to go back and fix what they were doing wrong. When you find yourself in that kind of situation is when you wish you had taken lessons.

There will be times when you feel like giving up, when your body is complaining about using muscles it didn’t know it had. But if you keep practicing you will notice the rewards begin to replace the pain. Just be sure that you are practicing your picking and chord shapes the right away. If you are practicing the wrong way, then you could be wasting your precious time.

Before you arrange any lessons or purchase any play guitar for beginners material, you should first become familiar with a few of the basic requirements that comprise a song. For example, do you have any understanding of exactly how a song that is played by a guitar is constructed? If notes is the answer, then you would be only partly correct.

Notes on their own are just component parts of a song but the critical element to any guitar song are groups of notes played as one, or chords. Chords are a series of notes that are selected to be played in unison because of their collective sound, and they sound beautifully melodic when played correctly.

Because most guitar songs will require you to learn some chords most play guitar for beginners lessons will usually start you with the easy to learn chords. The simplest guitar chords are G, C, D, and A. These are regarded as easy because you are not going to use many fingers and in fact, these four chords only require the use of 3 fingers.

Playing chords is achieved by pushing down on the strings at the fret on the guitar neck. While you push down on those strings with one hand, you strum the strings located in front of the sound hole in the body of the guitar with the other hand. Usually, as a beginner, it is a good idea to start learning on an acoustic guitar first and once you master the basics, you can then move on to an electric guitar, if you want.

On the subject of chords this is a good learn to play guitar for beginners tip: Avoid pressing the strings down too hard. Most beginners make this but you have to find the right balance of pressure. This will take a little time and practice to get right but the chord is unlikely to sound right if you are pressing too hard or not hard enough.

Another tip to use while playing the guitar is levelling down the wrist of the left hand (or right hand if you are left handed) is also worth bearing this in mind as it helps cut down the strain on your hand. Many beginners learning guitar fail to follow this step which is the reason the guitar makes a ‘buzzing’ sound, rather than a clear note. It can also lead to painful cramps in your hand which is why proper technique is so important.

Beginners should choose practice songs that contain less complicated chord movements, such as chords that touch almost the same fret. There are plenty of these song types to choose from out there. Finally, try practicing without looking at the fret, perhaps with your eyes closed; many professional guitar players seldom look at the fret whilst they are playing. When they do look at the fret, they are usually checking they have the correct finger placement because they have to play a complicated chord.

Try to memorize the hand and finger positions of all chords; they should become second nature to you. And remember, the secret to be able to play the guitar perfectly is by practicing every day. It also helps if you have excellent play guitar for beginners resources to learn how to play properly.
