Well, all of us who play the guitar would want to be an accomplished guitarist. However, the context in which your accomplishment holds true is also of prime importance. Playing the guitar is one thing, and playing it at a solo live event, is completely diverse. In order to be a great solo performer on stage, you need to be understanding lead guitar with a whole lot of clarity.

Firstly, get thorough with the scales and chords. Only then can you improvise to create your unique style. First we need to recognize the cords on which a particular tune is being played and this will determine the appropriate scale. You need to know which cord will synchronize with which scale, thoroughly. For example, if the cord has only two notes in it, play it in the pentatonic scale since this scale is only made up of five notes. However, if you choose a cord which has three notes, then you need to switch to the major or minor scales which have seven notes.

Till date, the easiest cord to be used in lead solo performances is the power cord. It’s the simplest, since it has only two notes and can well be juxtaposed with the pentatonic scale comprising of five notes. The more number of notes there are in common, the better it is and easier too. If you are playing a rock number, then you are completely settled with this. You do not need to change the scale during the entire song. The same is however not true for jazz, this requires more than one scales.

Sometimes you may get confused as to which scale to use, the major or minor pentatonic. The solution would be to use the minor one, most often. Understanding the difference between the two is very important. They are separated by just four frets and are commonly called the relative scales. In order to get a rapid practice on scale usage, choose tracks from diverse keys and styles, and try playing with them. This will strengthen your concepts and also give you adequate confidence and clarity.
Understanding lead guitar may not be an easy task, but it not a daunting one either.

Guitar Picking Technique – The Basics

If you want to do some serious guitar picking you need a fairly heavy pick. I recently read a post on a forum where a guy said he uses a dime for speed picking. This might be a trifle extreme but it illustrates how far you can go in the pursuit of individual style. Whatever you choose for a pick, hold it between your index finger and your thumb. That might seem obvious but we need to be on the same page. And let’s get something straight right away – you need to pay attention to how you hold the pick. The sound you get is cleaner if you are holding the pick parallel to the strings. Angling the pick gives a softer attack.

You pick guitar strings with the pointy part of the pick, and the idea is to pick clean and fast. But it takes practice. There are a few different ways of looking at developing picking speed. One school of thought says you keep your wrist rigid, starting the movement from the elbow. You can also just use the index finger and thumb in a circular movement but your body is probably going to want to move from the wrist.

Any mode of picking you actually use will be a mixture of the above methods reflecting your own body’s way of working. Here is a good place to mention pain. Don’t play through it, you will injure yourself. If your wrist or hand or arm hurts – stop. If it hurts when you start again tomorrow, maybe you should see a doctor. It’s best to look after your body and live to pick guitar another day.

For playing fast you need to develop your alternate picking technique. Start with a downstroke and do alternating down and up strokes. Don’t try for speed at this stage, you are just getting your muscles used to the picking movement.

Many guitar players mute the strings that they are not actually playing so no unnecessary sound is picked up. Place the meaty heel of your hand on top of the strings, in front of the bridge. If you are playing metal guitar, you will be going for the chugging sound that some pressure on the strings will give you. If you want to hear the notes ringing while you are playing fast, lessen the pressure of your hand on the strings.

Another consideration for a guitar picker is the dynamics of the sound produced by picking near the neck or near the bridge. You are possibly already aware that you get that Duane Eddy twang by playing close to the bridge, and the sound mellows as you move your picking hand closer to the neck.

Of course you are going to be in need of further exercises for getting your up and down strokes flowing automatically. You can get these from a teacher or from an internet search. For practicing muting and experimenting with different sounds, you should already know some songs you want to fool around with.

Has the guitar ever fascinated you? If you dream of playing it, your first step should be to learn the basics of guitaring. The guitar is used in a range of musical styles. A guitar normally has six strings, but there are those that have two, four, eight, or even twelve strings.

In forms of pop-like blues, flamenco, country, and rock music, one can play the guitar acoustically. Here, the tone is produced when you vibrate the strings with the help of the plectrum or with your fingers. The vibration of the strings is modulated by the hollow body. For better sound quality, you can also go for an amplifier that will manipulate the tone electronically.

Luthiers are those who repair as well as make guitars. Various kinds of wood are used for the making of a guitar.

You need to tune the guitar before you start trying to play it. There are a number of ways to do this. You could have a guitar tuner, such as a pitch pipe, harmonica, or a tuning fork. Simply play the tuner and try to match it with the note of the guitar strings. Start tuning at the sixth string of the guitar. This is the thickest string among all the strings, and the note played open here is an E note.

Continue tuning with the five other strings in the same manner. Once you do all of this, you have a tuned guitar that invites you to hold it in style and play well. This process of tuning is actually the standard tuning that (EADGBE) you will find the majority of the guitarists use.

The most versatile instrument in modern music, the guitar is a great item that all of you who have a passion for music should learn. If playing the guitar seems difficult, then the reason may be that you are not practicing enough. The truth is, it becomes easy to play if you give it the time and dedication it requires.

When learning to play this fabulous instrument, it is advisable that you start with an acoustic guitar. You also develop good guitar habits when you play the acoustic guitar. The strings of this guitar have more tension and are bigger, enabling your fingers to gather more strength and develop calluses.

Remember, the six strings, EADGBE, by remembering the phrase, “Eat All Day Get Big Easy.” Once you can play the acoustic guitar well, you can shift onto playing the electronic guitar.

Also try learning to play some chords. This is an essential part of the basics of guitaring. Start playing the C, D, G, E and A chords first. When you can play these chords really well, try playing the barre chords. Playing a barre chord requires a bit of expertise. It is played by laying your index finger across all the six strings and making up the rest of the chord with your remaining three fingers.

There are other basics of guitaring that you need to acquire if you want to master playing the guitar. Nothing comes easy, so if you dream to play the guitar well, you need to practice. There is no alternative.

The interface is simple to use. You put the sounds where you want them in the timeline of the beat measure. If you make a mistake all you have to do is take that beats or note out of its time slot and put it where you really want it. You can adjust the tempo, use the mixer to change the volume of certain parts, and string many parts together to make a song.

I’ve read a lot of people saying that video quality of the tutorials isn’t all that great. Apparently the video quality is less impressive than thebeat maker , and since the guys who started Sonic Producer are professional musicians and not movie makers, who can blame them . Maybe we can get them to do some better videos in the future.

Music: How To Write A Song – Midi And Sheet Music > Structure Of A Song

Structure Of The Song–Sheet music always begins in the second measure, so that’s where your song should begin as well. In order to determine where your first note should appear within the second measure, you need to assess your subsequent measure’s breaking points. Each measure’s format should neatly house a phrase or blocks of text in a logical fashion; for instance, the lyrics “All the trees are brown and the skies are gray, I went for a walk on a winter’s day” would be awkward if the measures broke up the text like this:

Measure 1: All the trees Measure 2: are brown and Measure 3: the skies are Measure 4: gray, I went Measure 5: for a walk. . .

If you use these breaking points, your song is emulating 3/4 time, which would be entirely confusing if your song is actually following a 4/4 time rhythm.

Structure Of The Measure–It would be much better to break up the measures like this:

Measure 1: All the trees are brown Measure 2: and the skies are gray Measure 3: I went for a walk Measure 4: on a winter’s day. . .

Once you have pushed the data so that you are close to this configuration, you’re on your way.

To help you, tap the beat with a pencil on your desk as you imagine singing the words of your song, but instead, count out loud: “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and” for 4/4 time, or “1 and 2 and 3 and” for 3/4 time. Next you’ll need to perform some simple math to help you figure out what types of notes need to be used in the measures. Here is a general guide to help you figure out where to place your notes within the measure. Mix and match to try and get the rhythm you need.

Using “o” to represent a note, for 4/4 timing in one measure:

1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and = Count o and 2 and 3 and 4 and = Whole Note — OR –

o and 2 and o and 4 and = Two Half Notes — OR –

o and o and o and o and = Four Quarter Notes — OR –

o o o o o o o o = Eight Eighth Notes — OR –

oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo = Sixteen Sixteenth Notes

Using “o” to represent a note, for 3/4 timing in one measure:

1 and 2 and 3 and = Count o and 2 and 3 and = Whole Note — OR –

o and 2 and o and = One Half Note and One Quarter Note — OR –

o and o and o and = Three Quarter Notes — OR –

o o o o o o = Six Eighth Notes — OR –

oo oo oo oo oo oo = Twelve Sixteenth Notes

In addition to figuring out what beat you’ll need, you’ll also need to figure out what the tempo should be – in other words, will the song be slow, medium, or fast in it’s “pace.” A standard or electronic metronome (or one located on an electronic piano) should be able to help you determine how fast you would like the song to be played.

Bones Of The Song–Now that you’ve identified where the words should fall within the measures, you have some math to perform in order to format the music notation, and it’s usually a good thing to document the tune first because you can use this to create your Lead Sheet. By math, I mean that if the first word of your song uses 1/2 beat, and the second word uses 1 beat, the remaining words for the measure will have to be proportioned properly using the 2-1/2 beats that remain in the measure of a 4/4 time measure, or in a 3/4 time measure, you would have 1-1/2 beats remaining.

Some people have great angst with making the music notation conform to a rigid standard, because it no longer truly represents the actual performance of the song. You have to remember that the basic idea is to standardize and sterilize the original music into a form that shows repeatable patterns, but most of all, consistent counting for note durations, in order to make the sheet music easier for someone else to decipher.

If you’ve never heard a song before you attempted to play it from sheet music, we all know that your first interpretation can be quite different from the interpretation you would have if you had actually heard the song before you attempted to play it from sheet music. Yet, in the instance that you had never heard the music before you attempted to play it from sheet music, your interpretation was mathematically correct, just not with the artist’s original inflections; then when you actually do hear the song after you’ve played it, you are then able to add your own inflections and even create some more unique ways of playing it.

Structure Of A Song–Structure for any song is created in the extreme because of the existence of and need for Sheet Music. Without the existence of Sheet Music, there would still be musical structure, but the structure would not be as stringent. For sheet music, great importance should be placed on presenting identical musical patterns within the exact same measure configurations throughout the song–in other words, don’t let the timing shift so that this time the words “and the skies are gray” appear all in one measure, and in an extended portion of the sheet music the same words are broken between 2 measures.

Sheet Music is to music as Poetry is to words; it is the mathematically-correct representation for your song with every attempt to duplicate the original performance, but to simplify the music as much as possible towards your intended audience. For that reason, you could have a Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced version of your sheet music; and don’t forget about Lead Sheets, which are extremely important for transporting your song through the musician’s world by having a version that contains only the melody (Treble Clef) and Guitar Chords, usually without musically-represented introductions or endings.

Credit tips for Artists and Musicians

An introduction to credit as it applies to a musician’s finances.

I have already outlined that as an artist, you’re main assets will be creativity, knowledge, and credit. I can’t stress credit enough. Times are quickly changing, and for the most part, we artists are on our own. With good credit, there’s a lot of ways to create shortcuts to success. Credit can get you a car, a house, and even an income on the side – much quicker than a record label can(even under the older system where they’d advance you money for these things and screw you when they took it back out of your royalties).

The first thing to check is whether you have good credit. If you don’t (contrary to what every other jackass who thinks they know anything will tell you), you can build/improve it relatively quickly. First thing… NEVER LISTEN TO THE ADVICE OF A CREDIT CONSOLIDATION COMPANY UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE YOUR OWN RESEARCH – THEN GET AT LEAST 5 OPINIONS. Those types of companies make a serious commision of of every service they provide, and usually credit councillors will in some way act out of self-interest.

I just googled “what is considered good credit” and in the first result found this phrase in the article:

“Actually to merely get a good credit rating, some agencies, like Fannie Mae consider that 620 is good. They will offer you a prime rate. On the other hand, some sources, like the PBS show Frontline have suggested that 770 is the optimal credit score. Most companies do say that you need at least 650-690 in order to have a good credit rating. An optimal credit rating is always considered over 700, and usually in the mid 700s.”

This was only true for the couple of months right after the fall of the mortgage industry. Mostly, this is untrue. This is where creativity and knowledge come into play. First thing to know… only like %5 or less of people in the western world have a 770 credit score. only ten percent have a score above 700. 650-690 truthfully is a good rating. 600 to 650 is still workable. I bought my house at teh tail end of the recession with a 620 credit score, and got a pretty damn good interest rate. For a car loan, or a line of credit, you can still do pretty well from 500 and up. Credit is scored out of 900, for those who don’t know.

Here’s some misinformed things people will tell you about your credit:

Establishing a good credit history has never been as important as it is today.

This is true to an extent, but they will tell you that if you have bad credit, you’ll never get a job or an apartment or a deal on a cell phone or car insurance. Your credit can’t effect any of these things.

-Job, how is credit a concern of theirs? A criminal record might be, but your credit isn’t unless you are up for a job that involves a company credit card, which, lets face it, if anything in this article is news to you, then you are not. Not to mention, what happened to being a musician for a living – self employed, homey, that’s the way to go.

-Apartment, maybe, if it’s a large property management company. Remember, don’t give your credit information to anyone unless you REALLY have to. If it’s a problem to get an apartment and you have bad credit, rent a basement apartment from a homeowner. Sometimes you have to lower your standards for a year while you fix your life, we have all been there. Also, remember that every time someone checks your credit, you lose like 10 points… so don’t go passing it out to dumbass landlords or their staff. You are really, at that point, giving them everything they may need to steal your identity.

-Cell phone? looooool. If you have a credit score that still has a pulse, you should be able to get a cell phone these days, there’s too much competition. If not… pay as you go isn’t as stupid as it was ten years ago, it’s actually pretty cheap. Again, it’s only temporary.

-Car insurance, this is the funniest one. Think about it. If you have bad credit, you aren’t likely to be buying a Benz. For a 5000 dollar car, a car insurance company makes their money back in your payments in like 2 years – assuming you have crashed and written it off – don’t drive like an idiot, because you probably have your gear i nyour car and you’re on your way to a gig or rehearsal. If you don’t write the car off, they make a lot of money off of you for nothing, thus your credit will be of very little concern. They are desperate for business – you pay them every month for something you are likely to never use, but are legally obligated to have. Best business model since cigarettes. Again, if your credit still has a pulse (and i’m still not convinced that car insurance companies even check) you will get insurance.

A late payment, maxing out your credit cards — can haunt you for years

Get out… no it can’t. Don’t believe the idiots. If you don’t have a late payment on some payments, it doesn’t even end up on your credit score for any other creditor to know that you have had that line of credit. The goal of this little tutorial is to build/improve your credit. Occasionally i purposely pay something late. It looks better on your credit report, shows that if you do fuckup, you will fix it. Plus, it shows that the little loans for guitars and stuff even exist, and you have more credit than just a cell phone.

As for maxing out your card… balance transfer. You can always transfer your balance to another credit card company for a lower interest rate. They want your business more than you need their money, trust me. Now, if your balance gets out of hand, and you find you can’t pay it, when they call you, you can always tell them some crap that makes them make you an offer – bam, then they cut your interest down anyways – then you can still do the balance transfer and save more. I HAVE DONE IT BEFORE… and you probably know someone who has done this too.

Now… keep this things in mind, and then go read this article, because every other tip they give you is true. It’s one of those MSN money articles for beginners.

The ones i speak of earlier are bullshit scare tactics from the propaganda machines of major financial institutions. Make your credit work for you, don’t work for it. Credit is the modern day slavery, if you lack the knowledge.

If you’ve made the choice to start learning guitar as an adult on your own, then there are really only a couple of ways to do it. You can learn on your own online or you can take private lessons. Obviously, there are other ways, but if you are scouring the internet for options, these are your choices. The decision can be a tough one. That’s why I have written this article. I have tried both and I am here to give my opinion on the matter. There are positives and negatives of both. Let’s go over them.Positives and negatives of taking private lessons: With private lessons you get one on one time with a real person every week or so. This can be a big advantage for those who are not self motivated or have troubles learning on their own at times. The downside is that with private lessons you have to go somewhere and take time out of your schedule to do it at a specified time. Positives and negatives of online learning: With online lessons, you can learn whenever and wherever you have time. This can be a big advantage for individuals who have tight schedules like most of us adults do. The biggest downside with online lessons is that it is not good for those who are not used to learning on their own. A lot of people also prefer the capability of speaking with a teacher over online lessons. There are certain programs that do a great job of counteracting problem with e-mail coaching like Adult Guitar Lessons which I highly recommend.In the end, it is completely up to you as to how you want to learn to play. There are merits and pitfalls of both ways. It is certainly not something to get overly hung up about though. If you try one method and it does not work for you, you can always go the other route. The important thing is that you begin doing what you love soon. If you enjoyed listening to rap music then there will come a time when you think “I wonder how difficult it is to produce your own music?”, maybe you have already thought about it?

Well a lot of people get to this stage and start looking up some information on how to do this.

Then you start to find that it can cost quite a lot for the equipment that you will need, on top of that there’s a lot more than what you think goes into the sampling and the recording of the beats that you hear.

So you’ll probably have to do some swatting up on music production as well!

A lot of us are not in a position to start forking out for a fully functional recording studio, so if this sounds where you are at the moment I have some good news for you.
