Teach Yourself to Play Guitar – Step by Step

If you wish to teach yourself to play guitar it is very important to get the basics right from the very beginning. Here is a step-by-step outline of the process which will, hopefully, enable you to realize your ambition. However, it is important to accept from the beginning that playing any musical instrument requires a significant commitment in time, effort and dedication. Just because the good instrumentalists make playing look easy, doesn’t mean that it is!

Here are the key steps which will set you off on the right road to success.

1) – If you are to succeed it is necessary to have a decent instrument to start on. Obviously you do not need to go to the nearest music shop and buy their most expensive instrument, but you do need a guitar of a reasonable quality. One of the main issues in making a good choice is to ensure that the guitar you purchase has what is usually known by guitarists as a good ‘action’. The word ‘action’ in this context means that the strings are not too high above the fret board. If they are too high then tuning will be poor and you will find playing rather a tiring experience. When you are learning the guitar you do not want to be in the situation of fighting the instrument. The learning process will be demanding enough without that! If you can consult an established guitarist, they will be able to guide you on this.

2) – Once you have a suitable instrument, the next step, if you are to teach yourself to play guitar successfully, is to decide on your teaching material. You may wish to purchase a tutor book but, far and away the best approach these days is to sign up to one of the online courses. There are a number of very good courses available. The advantage over tutor books is that these courses have video demonstrations to reinforce the information given

3) – Be methodical in your approach to learning. Patience and perseverance are key words in this issue. You will not teach yourself to play guitar like Eric Clapton in a few days. If you follow the course systematically and put in the required practice time you will develop. The more you practise the quicker you will learn. Be patient and resist the temptation to jump over bits of work in the course, You will live to regret that as there will be ‘holes’ in your technique and knowledge which will come back to haunt you in the future.

4) – Whichever course you study it will, at some stage, involve learning to read one or more of the different kinds of notation which we guitarists meet. Many guitarists play primarily from chords but you are highly likely to encounter guitar tabs too. Tabs are actually very easy to read as they are nothing more than a diagram to show you which fingers to put where on the strings. Don’t skip over this theoretical learning as it will greatly enhance your abilities in the long term.

5) – Once you have got a grasp of basic technique and can play with some fluency, try to find other people you can join in music making activities. This might be to join with other guitarists, join an existing band, form your own band, find a dance band or concert band who need a guitarist, etc. To finally be in the position of making music with others will be motivating and rewarding. If you encounter difficulties in your playing with any of these groups you will be all fired up to go home and practice until you have mastered the problem. You will have the pleasure and satisfaction of making the music you want to make whilst being motivated to go on improving.

Learning any instrument is an ongoing project. Starting off on the right foot is vital and continuing with a methodical approach will always pay dividends. So, if you have a genuine desire to teach yourself to play guitar, by following the plan outlined above you should have an excellent chance of realising your musical ambitions.

The Best Way For You To Learn The Guitar

If you want to learn the guitar, you will want to find the best wat to learn the guitar. Is there a BEST way? How will I know when I find the best way?

Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Look at that guy playing the guitar – that looks pretty easy! If they can do it, so can I! I wanted to learn how to play the guitar in the WORST WAY! Well, believe it or not, my wish was granted! Yup, you guessed it, I learned to play in the WORST way! I’m here to tell you – there is INDEED a WORST WAY! I bet you found it too, haven’t you? Ever try to Teach YOURSELF? The Worst! As I got a little older, I had a friend that had taught himself, and he was really good – at least by my standards. Well, why can’t I do that? I thought. So I began to try to teach myself, and it was a disaster! What did I know? I had never played the guitar before. I wasn’t able to figure out how to hold the guitar, or use my fingers for chords, and man – those strings hurt! My friend was doing pretty well. Welle enough that he could play for people as they walked by on the boardwalk. They would throw money in his case! NO WAY! What a deal! I KNEW I wanted to learn NOW! I should be able to teach myself, if he could Right? Wrong!

So why couldn’t he just teach me? Since he could obviously play. Well, some people just can’t teach even if they know what they are doing. Sadly, he was never able to pass on what he knew. You never have to worry that your instructor will get upset or frustrated that you are taking longer to progress than he might like. Take as much time as you need to make sure you are getting it. No one will care if you have to see it again for the 500th time before you are ready to move on.

How to Slow Down a Guitar Solo

The FASTEST way, hands down, to become a better guitar soloist is to study and learn the guitar solos of your favorites guitarists. By doing so you

Learn new guitar phrases, licks and patterns
You automatically become more technically proficient on the fretboard
You adopt that guitarists style of playing and will start to sound a little more like him with all your guitar solos in the future.

How the heck do you learn a blazing fast guitar solo when it is so fast it is almost a blurr?

Slow Down The Guitar Solo, Slow Down the Music!

There are a couple of software programs you can do this with. I USE to use Blaze Media Pro.  It is not designed for this purpose but it works.  The main problem with it is that when you slow down the guitar solo with it you also reduce the pitch which sends the music out of tune with your guitar which is a real nightmare if you have locking tremlo system on your guitar.

Then I discovered RiffMaster.  RiffMaster Slows down the music but that is just the start of what RiffMaster can do. With RiffMaster you can:

Slow down the guitar solo to really any speed you want.  You can slow down the music just a tiny bit or as much as 1/5 of its original speed.  You precisely control how much you slow down the musc with a slider bar.
You CAN slow down the music pitch with a seperate sider bar.  This is useful if you load a song into RiffMaster and it is out of tune with your guitar.  Don’t retune your guitar.  Re tune the song!  Much simpler and quicker
Use the built in 8 band equilizer to drown out or muffle background music and make the lead guitar sound louder, crisper, and clearer.  This is usually done by moving the low bass and high treble sliders down and moving the midrange up.  When you find the EQ setting that works most of the time for most guitar solos you can save this setting as a preset for future music you load into RiffMaster.
Save all or part of the music as a .wav or .mp3 file.  This way when you load in a song you want to slow down, slow the music down to the speed you want, adjust the EQ so the lead guitar stands out, you can now save it with your settings intact so when you want to listen later you just double click on the mp3 and your guitar solo is there for you to learn from
Set a music loop start and end point.  (the lead guitar solo you want to slow down the music for) and loop the music at this point.  Benefit: say there is a tiny portion of the lead you want to study like say a 2 second part of the lead guitar solo.  You loop that portion over and over while you figure it out and play it on your guitar.  Once you have figured out the part delete the start and end loop points.

One feature of RiffMaster for slowing down musc that is nice is that RiffMaster is not a memory hog.  While running my task manager showed it was using a whopping 30 MB of ram.

Now do not get me wrong.  For slowing down music to learn a guitar solo there are a couple of options out there software wise but I personally have now found a program for slowing down music that has all the features and tools that RiffMaster has.

Another options to consider for learning guitar solos is guitar tabs.  Guitar tabs are pretty accurate.  But I personally find guitar tabs as being extremely tedious and way too left brained for learning guitar solos.  It is sort of how Waldo learns a lead guitar solo.  You can also listen to another guys interpretation on youtube but I never really felt comfortable with that.  It is sort of like getting a story from a friend who told a friend who told a friend sort of thing.  I want to get it straight from the guitarist.

Myths About Left Handed Guitar And Left Handed Guitarists SHOT DOWN IN FLAMES

There are various very FALSE “ideas” floating about in our society on the subject of learning to play guitar that have to do with being left or right handed. These ideas stem from ignorant right handed guitarists, lazy guitar teachers, or money-motivated sales staff at musical instrument shops who are on kickbacks from some particular guitar brand, and sometimes even from bitter and twisted left-handed guitarists themselves who somehow feel “cursed.” However the latter only comes about because of the former.

The unfortunate consequence of these false data is that they influence parents and children in their choices of playing or learning guitar.

Let’s get one thing very straight. These common misconceptions I am about to present you herein ARE myths.

A myth ceases to be a myth once it has been revealed to be otherwise. It is dispelled easily by providing the Truth.

So, lefty guitarists and right handed guitarists can equally learn something here. You may be very surprised to know some new things here or have some misconceptions dispelled. I hope so!

MYTH ONE. “A guitar is like a piano. There is only one way to play it.”

This is one of the biggest, outmoded, ignorant, and totally incorrect statements there is on this subject. Yes, a piano is played one way. But even then, depending on whether you play Classical or modern piano, what you do with your right and left hands are quite different. So in a way, a piano is not played one way either! And definitely no – a guitar is not played one way.
In fact, the way people play guitars in Rock and Pop music today, t is actually of greater benefit that a right handed person actually play guitar left handed – with his or her dominant hand on the fret board, instead of the other way round which is the traditional way. For modern music, it is not about being just a “strummer” like it was 60 years ago. Guitar playing has EVOLVED. Isn’t it surprising that some of the world’s best Rock guitarists are left-handers playing guitar right-handed – the reverse scenario!

MYTH TWO. “It is harder to learn guitar left-handed in a world dominated by right-handed teachers and right handed instruction books.”

This is a doozer. In fact learning guitar left handed is EASIER from a right-handed teacher than a left-handed teacher because everything the teacher shows you is a MIRROR IMAGE of what you are doing and easier to follow! Right handed guitarists learning from a right handed teacher have to do a mental switcheroo to get what they are doing right! That is an extra step a left-handed learner does not have to take! And books? There are books for left-handed instruction. They exist and they are not hard to get. There aren’t as many but that is a good thing. Less possibilities of confusion. Right handed guitar instruction materials are so abundant that there is an OVERSATURATION of material which frankly makes anyone giddy when trying to make sense of it all.

MYTH THREE. “You can’t get many left-handed guitars.” Or “It’s hard to find a left handed guitar.”

This WAS true until recently. In 2006 an Australian company called Gaskell Guitars came to be. Gaskell Guitars makes left handed guitars and basses EXCLUSIVELY, and is the only company in the world that does.

Gaskell has grown in the last few years to be the number one brand in the world for left handed guitars. Several major guitar brands have stopped making lefthanded guitars: Gibson, Paul Reed Smith, Rickenbacker. They stopped due to “lack of demand.” That is another myth.

MYTH FOUR. “There is not much demand for left handed guitars”

This is the biggest myth of the lot. This idea is definitely a commercially motivated right handed guitar manufacturer’s point of view. Although there are much less left handed guitarists in the world there are still many. Lefty guitarists do exist – and they are all over the world – young and old. This is a fact that right handed guitar companies will never be aware of because they operate on TURNOVER and their turnover consists of right handed guitars – for the majority. Understandable, but not true!

If you are a left-handed guitarist reading this realize this: there are plenty of people like you in the world – PLENTY!

You do not need to feel bad about being a left handed guitarist.

And parents take note; let your son or daughter play the way they feel is comfortable for them. Do not change that because some lazy teacher or kick-back motivated shop salesman tries to tell you otherwise. There is a lot of garbage still thrown around on this subject. Realize they are self-serving myths and don’t fall prey to that!
