Electric Guitar Lesson – Make Your Riff Heavy Using Plam Muting Technique

What is Palm Muting?

Palm Muting is the most frequently used technique in rock and heavy metal songs. It produces heavy grind and chunk sound that crank up the amp when using a high gain distortion, therefore the results is really heavy.

Palm muting involves the dampening of the strings on your guitar with the edge of your picking hand. Place the edge of your picking hand onto the strings as if you wanted to mute them between the bridge and the first pickup close to the bridge.

Use your pick and pluck at a given string or power chord. Hold your pick slightly downward just like you’re slicing the string and create a grind on the string.

Find the sweet spot that makes your sound the heaviest and the crunchiest possible. You can get different sounds, depending on how far from the bridge you are palm muting. Experiment with it. The further you are from the bridge, the more you will mute the strings, which has a more percussive, drum-like feel. Moving towards the bridge, or even resting part of the edge of your palm on the bridge, makes the muting effect lighter. 

The amount of pressure you apply onto the string with the edge of your palm greatly influences the sound. Experiment with it, notice how you can get fuller sounds with a lighter palm mute, and more percussive sounds with heavy muting.

Turning up the gain on your distortion effects really brings out the crunchy sound of palm muting.

These are some great applications when you apply palm muting technique on your guitar playing

- You can vary between using and not using palm muting at any given point in the riff. This can be used to increase the rhythmic effect as well. All you have to do is raising your palm slightly, and then lower it back onto the strings when appropriate. 

-  You can also use Palm muting with a single string (low string) alternate picking attack as your left hand finger fretting.

-It is also great with an open E string run using a single string scale.

Can You Still Play Guitar if You are Tone Deaf ?

Having a disability should not be hindrance nor keep a person from pursuing a goal. Though the task may be difficult, it is not impossible.

A good example is Beethoven. Though this composer could hear as a child, he gradually lost his hearing after many years of playing the piano. It did not stop this not stop him from creating many masterpieces that are still played and treasured today. The secret was being able to feel the vibrations each time the keys were depressed.

Being tone deaf means that a person is not able to distinguish various pitches. Though it does not occur often, a person who has this problem can still learn how to play a guitar.

Songs are made up of different notes and at various pitches. Since each note has a distinguishable tone, start by playing each note and listening to each one carefully. When the person has is able to distinguish the changes, he can start playing the song.

It takes visualization for this to happen he should look at the reflection in a mirror when striking each chord. Later, when he is confident, he can try playing it without any visual aid.

Making some improvements to the instrument will also assist the player. The inlay is one part of the guitar that needs to be modified. Usually, this comes in dots, diamond shapes and parallelograms. By adding lights to it, the person will know at what pitch is being played so that he can still know the tone of the music.

If the person is financially able he can have the guitar wired to a machine that will monitor the notes being strummed and comparing that with the notes of the song. By knowing where the mistakes are made when practicing on it, he will be able to correct them and play correctly.

Tone deafness is something that may have been inherited at birth or may happen to a person later in life. Many internet websites offer free guitar lessons online so it is easy to find another instructor if you need to. Do not settle for a guitar instructor who is mediocre or one whom you find it difficult to work with. If you take your desire to become a guitarist seriously you should find an instructor who does too.

Learn How To Execute And Play Guitar Chords

One of the basic lessons in playing the guitar is to knowing how to execute every chord and play it. You will not be successful in learning to play the guitar if you do not know how to execute the chords properly. Before starting to learn how to execute chords, you should remember 2 things. First is to prepare a guitar chord diagram and second is to learn how to read the chords in a diagram.

After preparing your guitar chords diagram, you are ready to learn how to read it.

The guitar chord diagram will have different parts:

Vertical lines, horizontal lines, name of chord, dot marker, circle o markers, numbers and x markers.

The first step to learn guitar lesson is to know what the vertical and horizontal lines are. The vertical lines in the diagram are actually the strings of the guitar. You will notice that the vertical lines are 6 lines which correspond to the 6 strings. The horizontal lines are the frets. The frets are the embossed lines in the neck behind the strings. Whenever you place your finger on the strings, you will notice that there are embossed lines behind them. Those are the frets, AKA the horizontal lines in the diagram.

The diagram which shows the vertical lines and the horizontal lines is actually the neck of the guitar. The vertical and horizontal lines are the guide lines. The next thing you should know is what type of chord you are looking at. You will notice the name of the chord above the vertical and horizontal lines.

After knowing which chord you are playing, the next step is to know where to place your fingers. You will know this by following the dot markers drawn inside the vertical and horizontal lines. You will notice that every dot marker is always drawn in line with the horizontal lines. The reason behind this is that every finger you position on the neck should always touch a string to perfectly execute the chord. This is one of the steps to learn guitar lesson in way that you will make it easy for you to know the next steps.

In determining which finger to use, you will notice that in every dot marker there is a number below it which is in line with it as well. These numbers represent which finger to use in positioning your fingers on the dot marker.

The following is the representation of each number for your fingers:

Index Finger 1

Middle Finger 2

Ring Finger 3

Pinky 4

The last part to know in reading the diagram is to know the meaning of the x marker and the o marker. You will normally see these markers outside the vertical and horizontal lines. The dot marker inside the vertical and horizontal lines is different from the o marker outside the vertical and horizontal lines. The x marker means that you will not play that string. It means that in strumming, you will not strum the string where you can find an x marker. The o marker is the opposite of the x marker. In the o marker you will strum that string even though there is no finger positioned in that string.

After learning how to read the diagram, there is one last thing to remember before completing to learn guitar lessons. Remember that you will strum the strings that have an o marker and also the strings where your fingers are positioned.

So, you’ve decided that you want to learn how to play the guitar! Unfortunately, it can seem very daunting to start. You might stare at the guitar and not have any idea what you’re supposed to do with it! It’s time to lose the fear and fulfill your dream of becoming a guitarist today.

It’s all the same notes as the G major scale but with the second degree as the tonal center or root. typical dorian type progression has its I chord as a minor chord and it’s IV as a dominant 7 chord (such as Amin7 to D7 or D9) It’s also all the same notes a D mixolydian, so this new shape could be a new position of the mixolydian from my other video. obviously there’s a lot of theory behind it, so when all else fails, just plug it in and try it out.
