Guitar Chords Learn To Play – Fast Tips To Improve Your Chord Transitions

There are a lot of songs out there for the guitar and most of them involve two chords or more to play. However, the difficult aspect of playing chords isn’t forming them, but transitioning between them.

Once you master the technique of transitioning smoothly between two chords, you can really present yourself as a professional when you play any guitar tunes. Here are a few tips to improve your chord transitions when you play the guitar.

1. Know the chords before you play them.

When you learn guitar chords to play, your fingers know exactly where they need to be when the time comes to play. If your fingers hesitate before they make it to the next chord, work on solidifying those chords into the memory of your fingers so that you can form them with your eyes closed.

2. Work through the progressions slowly.

We all know that you’re going to need to play fast eventually, but now is not the time when you’re developing smooth chord transitions. Practice at a tempo that allows you to play a progression perfectly before you decide to increase the speed.

3. Plan the path of your fingers.

Sometimes a couple chords might have your fingers tripping over each other on their way to the next chord formation. Plan where you’re going to place your fingers next and how they’re going to get there in order to avoid your fingers getting tangled up in the process.

4. Go between two chords over and over again.

A little monotony isn’t a bad thing when you have a difficult set of chords to get through and you might need to bite the bullet and hash it out. When two chords can’t seem to transition, play between those chords over and over again to ingrain them into your muscle memory.

5. Place your fingers on the frets simultaneously.

Learning chords to play can get you into a habit of placing your fingers on the frets one at a time, but you’ll be slowing down your technique. When you form a chord, practice placing all of your fingers on the strings at the same time.

This will shorten the amount of time you need to play each chord and increase your playing speed overall.

6. Strum through the transitions.

There are going to be subtle hesitations between each chord when you first begin, but you need to continue to strum through the pauses. If a pause is only for half a second, playing through it gives a more fluent feel to the progression.

Whether you like it or not, you’re going to need to learn to play guitar chords because they’re everywhere. Focus on creating very smooth transitions and fluent formations and your audience will start to recognize you as a professional.

Guitar Scales – Learning How to Play Guitar Scales

Guitar scales are the collection of notes used when playing a guitar progression. There are different kinds of scales, which are being used in different songs. The most common guitar scale is the Chromatic or the Major, other types include the natural minor, harmonic minor, and the melodic minor.

The very first to learn is of course the Chromatic scale, which is the series of 12 notes starting from any note. It shows what notes are in the fret board and it makes remembering the fret notes easy.

The chromatic scale for C for example is C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B C. You might notice that every note has a sharp or flat between the succeeding note except for E and B. to make this easy the chromatic is just the scale of a note and you’ll go one step higher each time until you reach the octave of the same note you’ve started.

Next to learn is the most important one, which is the Major scale. It is the basis of all the things needed to play the guitar. Most chords are derived and constructed from this. An example of a Major scale is the C major which is basically all the chord notes without flats and sharps. C D E F G A B C is the major of C note.

Another type of scale created the Natural Minor. Its sounds fit well on rock acts for its deep darker tone.

The natural minor or the “minor” has a lowered 3rd note and so as its 6th ad 7th note.

Another minor is the Harmonic, which is commonly found in classical music. Most instrumental shredders use this scale because of its eastern vibe.

The harmonic is the same as the natural minor instead the lowered 7 (b7) is reset to a major 7. Last of the minor scales is the melodic minor, which is rarely used, but it also gives that jazzy vibe. The melodic minor is composed of two scales, the ascending and descending. The ascending melodic minor formula is the same as the major, but with a lowered 3rd note, while the descending melodic minor is also the same as the natural minor.

There is also what we called modes or an alternation of major. These are also another formula to play the guitar scales. Examples of this is the Ionian, which is the major; the Dorian, which has a lowered 3rd and 7th note and is ideal for jazz music; the Phrygian, which has a lowered 2 3 6 and 7th note; the Lydian, which has a sharp 4th note; the Mixolydian, which has a lowered 7th note and the same as melodic minor scale; the Aeolian which is the same as the Natural minor scale; and the Locrian a Diminished with lowered 2nd, 3rd , 5th, 6th, and 7th note.

Learning the Pentatonic Guitar Scales for Soloing and Lead Guitar

Learning the Pentatonic guitar scales is a must if you want to play any lead guitar or have been trying to and want to improve. These are the most important scales for soloing and coming up with unique riffs for any major form of music.

Starters

There are major and minor pentatonic scales. Each scale consists of 5 notes which differs from most other scles which are generally 7 or more notes. This can be helpful to beginners with less notes to remember and fewer chances to get lost on the neck.

The major and minor pentatonic scales have the exact same shape (positioning and fingering on different strings and frets) , they’re just played at different locations on the neck. It’s advisable that you do know the notes on the first couple of strings to make this a bit easier since the shapes are the easy part, knowing the starting and ending notes is the key to knowing what scale you are and need to be playing.

The Shapes

There are 5 different shapes for the pentatonic first through fifth position. Each shape corresponds to the note from the scale you start with.

EXAMPLE: An A minor pentatonic scale on the 6th string would stat at the 5th fret for an A, then slide up three frets, slide of two frets, slide up two more frets, then finally slide up three frets. These are the 5 notes of the A minor pentatonic scale.

To play the sale in a particular position would mean to start at a different note through out the scale. So for the first position of the A minor pentatonic scale you’d start at the 5th fret on the 6th string. The second position you would start that the second note of that A minor scale. So according to the example above if the first note is the 5th fret on the 6th string the second note is after you slide up 3 frets, being the 8th fret on the 6th string.

I know this can be difficult to visualize images do come in handy when you’re learning the pentatonic guitar scales. For each of the 5 notes in the A minor pentatonic scale there is a different position.

So the positions would start at:

Position 1 – 5th fret of 6th string
Position 2 – 8th fret of 6th string
Position 3 – 10th fret of 6th string
Position 4 – 12th fret of 6th string
Position 5 – 15th fret of 6th string

The shapes themselves will have to be for another lesson since it would be a long drawn out and confusing article if I chose to try and explain each shape. A good learn to play guitar dvd should outline the shapes and stress the importance of not only memorizing the scale(s) and notes on the string but also the require shapes for each position.

The shapes stay the same, it’s just the root notes that are modified to play the different major and minor pentatonic scales. This takes some practice and you should start slow and try to find some backing tracks if possible. Playing these scales over full band tracks is fun and a better way to learn then just sitting there playing it over and over alone.
