How to Play Guitar Notes

How to Play Guitar Notes

You have your eye on learning a beautiful instrument called the guitar.  You know how amazing it sounds when your favorite artists use that particular instrument.  You start to wish you can play the guitar like the professionals.  What is stopping you from learning?  You do not where to begin.  Why not learn how to play guitar notes?

By learning how to play guitar notes, you will gain the understanding of notation.  With this you can transpose this knowledge into other instruments–something you might want to look into later on in your musical career.  Also, when you learn how to play guitar notes, you will be learning how to build the strength in your hand.  For now, let us learn the basics of how to play guitar notes.  Here are the steps:

1. Get a guitar. It does not matter what type of guitar you use–i.e., electric or acoustic.  Just make sure you are comfortable with the instrument.

2. Make sure you are sitting upright.  By sitting in this form, you will be able to see what you hand is doing.  This will also ensure that you will not hurt your back.

3. Place guitar on lap.

4. Place one hand in the area to strum.  If you have an acoustic guitar, this would be around the sound hole.  If you have an electric, this would be around the pick-ups.

5. Place one hand on the fret board.  This is what we are going to focus our attention.

6. Place your index in between the first and second fret of the small “E” string—the tiniest string.  The note you will be playing is “F#”.  Also, frets are the thin shiny metal pieces that are all over the fret board.  These are use to separate notes.

7. Make sure your knuckles do not buckle. This will ensure a sharp note sound.

8. Locate what string your finger is pressing.

9. Pick the string to make a sound.  Did you make a sound?  If not, go back to step 7. Also, make sure you are on the tip of your finger.  This will hurt a bit, but this will go away when you build calluses on your fingers.

For step 6, practice with different fingers.  For example, instead of your index, use your middle finger.  If you practice this often, you will build up the strength in you hand to prepare yourself for more advanced guitar lessons.

Three Reasons You Should Learn to Play Guitar

Three Reasons You Should Learn to Play Guitar

Guitar is one of the most popular instruments that people study today.  Many kids want to learn guitar from the moment they first see a rock band on TV playing a song.  They think not only does it look cool, but it looks fun.  But in addition to being “cool” and “fun,” there are many reasons to learn to play guitar.

Learning music in general has been shown in studies to both lead to a higher aptitude in mathematics in also pattern recognition.  The basis for rhythm is fractional math, and music allows one to assimilate this concept on a semi-subconscious level.

Learning to read music will have a carryover to any other instrument that is studied in the future, especially if the new instrument reads treble clef music like guitar does.  But aside from clef changes, reading music is reading music: half notes are always half notes, quarter notes are always quarter notes, etc.

Learning music increases one’s appreciation of music.  People who have formally studied music tend to enjoy listening to more complex and better-composed music than people who have never studied music.  This is one example of how music appreciation can be increased by studying an instrument.

Of course, then there are the other reasons, such as impressing your friends, getting jobs playing gigs, and rocking out along with your favorite CDs. For anyone who wishes to learn to play guitar, there are a variety of ways to learn, from live guitar teachers to guitar lessons for beginners available on DVD.
