Three Reasons You Should Learn to Play Guitar

Three Reasons You Should Learn to Play Guitar

Guitar is one of the most popular instruments that people study today.  Many kids want to learn guitar from the moment they first see a rock band on TV playing a song.  They think not only does it look cool, but it looks fun.  But in addition to being “cool” and “fun,” there are many reasons to learn to play guitar.

Learning music in general has been shown in studies to both lead to a higher aptitude in mathematics in also pattern recognition.  The basis for rhythm is fractional math, and music allows one to assimilate this concept on a semi-subconscious level.

Learning to read music will have a carryover to any other instrument that is studied in the future, especially if the new instrument reads treble clef music like guitar does.  But aside from clef changes, reading music is reading music: half notes are always half notes, quarter notes are always quarter notes, etc.

Learning music increases one’s appreciation of music.  People who have formally studied music tend to enjoy listening to more complex and better-composed music than people who have never studied music.  This is one example of how music appreciation can be increased by studying an instrument.

Of course, then there are the other reasons, such as impressing your friends, getting jobs playing gigs, and rocking out along with your favorite CDs. For anyone who wishes to learn to play guitar, there are a variety of ways to learn, from live guitar teachers to guitar lessons for beginners available on DVD.
