jeffgnr :
this was a great video. i just keep mind effing myself here. i recorded that same exact chord progression, and because it’s in E, I played in D major to get Dorian. is that right?
pickslide812 :
Great lesson. been practicing my mode soloing to an album i found on itunes by a guy name jon hall. not for beginners. hard to find because his first name is spelled without an h in it. worth finding.
madeku :
to think of them as G major, or A dorian is confusing to me (just getting into music theory finally). im only upto thinking of modes as different patterns, just where you play them. playing that “dorian”. playing the dorian pattern off of whatever root. just like you would with chords.
cjkeegan100 :
this is what ive been looking thank you
bonasera13 :
Thanks for the vids and keep going dude. Learned alot. Nothing for beginners.
SpiteJay :
Love these videos, very edible info
spirogrinder2 :

ganjagladiator :
u got good method….you remind of snoopy man.
danwhelo :
THANK YOU!!!
what he means by the 4 major chord is the 4th chord of a given key eg:in the key of A the 4th chord is D and in the key of G the 4th chord is C.
Skadoosh417 :
What’s a 4 major chord?
runeguldberg :
This is not for learning. This is for him to show what he has learned. Presented very fast. Ok. I learned a little.
felphero :
so you’re saying that in order to make a solo have that different mode sound i have to see if the chords are major or minor and them like relate them to the modes, like if it’s a “G major” i use a “G mixolidian” or a “G minor” i use a “G dorian” even thought the notes of “G dorian” scale aren’t the same notes of the “G minor” scale, is that it?
thejack1212 :
is ionian what he’s talikng about
Ball90210 :
Great job caught this over at John Denner ‘s channel
RsGhost1 :
Some modes like Aeolian or Dorian should be played over Minor chords though.
RsGhost1 :
If you have a G major chord.. you could use a major scale in a different key than G to get a cool sound. You can choose between G A B C D E or F# because those are the notes of the G major scale or G Ionian. Let´s say you choose to play B Major over a G major chord. To make it work you have to emphasize the G notes so it will sound good so it´s basically B major in the key of G. Because that sounds weird they called it B Phrygian
Same goes for all of the modes.
Acousticshredder24 :
This was incredibly helpful to my playing and I am glad this was posted!
BrownGuitar11 :
its crazy how like 4 months ago i didnt understand this guy but now i understand everyword he says
dmnxCGi :
and yes correct, B dorian = A major scale
C dorian = A# major scale (not A major, if you don’t understand this i can do a quick explanation)
dmnxCGi :
if you already understand the pattern of major scale,
you want to play A Dorian, there are two approach to look at it (basically the same thing):
1. play G Major scale, emphasize on the second note (which is A).
or (same thing, different way to look at it)
2. play A Major scale with flat 3rd and flat 7th, that is, flat the third note and the seventh note of the A Major scale
dmnxCGi :
first of all you have to know major scale (Ionian), which is the simplest way describe it is: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, (Do), this scale intervals is the most familiar to our ears. use this as a base for understanding modes.
Boritosai :
Hey I’ve got a question, When You play uhmm… A, and you wanna sound Dorian, do you have to play a Dorian then, what comes from G or do you have to play B dorian what comes from A
CP3Hornets30 :
its another word for scale
prjctcivilian :
it is true the dorian scale is still all the same notes as the major scale
snowypetrel :
Lots of tutor books insist on modes being alterations to the scale, that C dorian for instance is some sort of C minor, but as you state really well, C Dorian is about playing a C Major from the D to the D and emphasizing the second degree of the C Major. Thank you Dude!
witchchild636 :
thanks so much, i have wanted to start to learn to play for a while now, and i’m going to give it a try after my exams, so your videos are really helpful and easy to follow, so thanks
adjohns1 :
Please PLAY the example piece first…before you talk about it…gives us a better chance to understand what you are talking about…and learn.
THANKS for your lessons.
rockongoodpeople :
sure, to move your playing forward you will want to try and vary the strum – playing different patterns and rhythms within the same song and even changing the strum from chord to chord – check out some of my other lessons here as I have some lessons on just that. rockon!

lotsooo :
do you think you need to keep the struming the same all the way througth or can you vary it alot, staying in time of course? Thanks for vid, nice detail
rockongoodpeople :
Hi – depends – when recording video lessons I usually plug it in to an amo and mic the amo so I can control the audio levels on video – but sometimes I mic the acoustic up close with no amp and at times I just have a room mic – all depends on the setup I want that day and the sounds I need to capture – If I remember right on this video I think I am going unplugged with just a room mic – but I am not totally sure as I film so much its tough to remember every session
rock on!
David T
6stringmus1c :
David, when recording your acoustic is it unplugged?
JerryAmoz :
@JerryAmoz its a babilon
JerryAmoz :
i need help, i play electric guitar, but im gettin into acoustic, i can play chord songs in electric, like hotel california, and thinga like that, but when i play in acoustig with the same chords, sounds kinds…. weird, like too strong, why?
tzeolotltenamaxtli :

saludos desde Mexico
dadszx7 :
nice lesson as always, Thanks for all that you do for us in the guitar world
norskihead :
rock on
Zed1967 :
The most profound thing my guitar tutor said to me was that as a musician I only have control over two things.
The note value, of which you are limited to the range between 0 to 12 and the note time which you are limited to the range of 0 to infinity. A bit philosophical I know but it has stuck in my head and is very true

@paulgnc24 I’ll stick with my takamine for now, until I can afford a Martin….some day.
paulgnc24 :
@Dannicthemanic yes they are.. and affordable too!. haha but they have those really expensive ones. but i wish i’d have a taylor or a martin guitar LOL.. show off:)
belleray2 :

rockongoodpeople :
Hi – the guitar I used in this lesson is a Taylor GS5 – it has a cedar top and tropical american mahogany back and sides – warm and rich sounding acoustic for sure

Dannicthemanic :
Honey you can’t hide your lyin’ eyes.
Dannicthemanic :
@paulgnc24 Takamines are amazing, eh?
RT101894 :
i love that Taylor. . . Cedar top? correct?
paulgnc24 :
@rockindavid310 at least for me.. i’ve played a $1700 martin acoustic but it doesn’t seem to sound any better than a takamine or a laguna acoustic.. but martin is a big name i guess you paying for the top of the line wood and top of the line manufacturing.. i’m comparing sound wise. but everyone has their own opinion. thnx:)
