The Smiths – This Charming Man – How to play / guitar lesson
Firstly, this is just me trying to help you to learn this song. If want to tell me how wrong you think I am then you are not the person that this video is aimed at (and maybe you should do a lesson yourself to show everyone how it should be played!). I am still learning myself but wanted to do this as it may help someone else. I know that I struggled to learn this song. Hopefully this will help you learn how to play this fantastic song. I play it with standard tuning and no capo. If you want to play along with the original version you will need to tune your guitar down. If you want to play along with the Hatful of Hollow version you will need to play part 1 more than you would do on the original version. Don’t bother letting me know if you think I have made any mistakes. I am not professing to be a ‘teacher’, simply trying to help anybody who wants it. Enjoy.

the intro part you played sounds really wrong when u play the 12 fret note 3 times. actually sounds horrible
juanrules :
I have the same guitar, put some new Pups in it and repainted the body and headstock just for some extra eye candy. Seriously love this tutorial! thanks!
IngridBergmanLove :
Good Video I love this song!!
iamjohn89 :
nice lesson thanks for that mate but this charming man was actually done on a 1954 telecaster (even though theres a rickenbacker in the video)
amw294 :
Thanks. I must say that I prefer my Tele to play and get a decent Smiths sound from. I understand that This Charming Man was actually recorded on a Tele so that says something I guess.
MegaGARFISH :
I don’t much like the Jagmaster, but I DO like your easy going teaching style! I think all Marr fans have their own interpretations as you say. It’s NOT helped by the fact that Johnny used to ‘detune’, capo up etc, to fit Mozzer’s vocal range. I tend to leave one guitar tuned up a whole tone for all the stuff off the first Smiths album. Rickenbackers?? A Strat gives all the ‘jingle f***ing jangle’ (as HE called it in Guitarist) you need! Keep up the tutorials Adam.
eldeadbeat :
thanx man this helps alot keep up the good work
mellaphoric :
Wow! Thank you so much for posting this. This tune has baffled me in the past.
amw294 :
Neither. It is a Squire Jagmaster. Supposed to be a cross between a Jaguar and Jazzmaster. It is OK but tends to go out of tune quickly. Not as good as my Tele but it is fairly easy to play and I quite like the look of it.
NLaveryGB :
what guitar you using mate?
Jag or Jazz?
amw294 :
Lots!!! If you Google Smiths on Guitar (excellent web site/blog) then go to the right hand side you will find out.
